I find the easiest way to get healthy fat into my kids is to combine it with starch - white rice in particular. Cook it with bone broth and ghee or roasted bone marrow or all of the above. My kids will eat pretty much anything with rice. Shreds of liver, beets, you name it. You can also cook it with coconut milk and a cinnamon stick. It is heavenly. They also love eggs (most of the time). I try to stuff them at breakfast with eggs and meat and some fruit, when they snack it's macademia nuts, yogurt (full fat) or fruit… then they eat less junk. A surprising thing about having kids is that other people always want to feed them garbage.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04429177284200775781noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3045634714760830992.post-10750940929899461242011-07-27T16:37:41.199-04:002011-07-27T16:37:41.199-04:00Interesting study! Between the piped in fat, piped in music, and piped in images, I would have titled the study "A clockwork coconut".Aaron Blaisdellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17204484453346358921noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3045634714760830992.post-55958698996352899242011-07-27T11:07:57.951-04:002011-07-27T11:07:57.951-04:00One tricky thing for me and my wife, is how to get...One tricky thing for me and my wife, is how to get our 11 year-old, mood-disorder diagnosed son, to stop eating so many sugars and refined flour products. We don't need the common "advice" of just not having it around the house, but perhaps some suggestions on how to gradually increase kid-friendly fats and proteins in his diet. I am convinced that outside his genetic predisposition for his disorder (from me and I eat 80% primal and still struggle with anxiety/depression), his diet is playing a significant role in his anxiety and mood swings.Christopherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03619367016765432142noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3045634714760830992.post-10298194683519435132011-07-27T10:17:29.812-04:002011-07-27T10:17:29.812-04:00Well, what do you want to eat when you are feeling...Well, what do you want to eat when you are feeling blue - an apple or a chocolate bar?

Ice cream. I think if you asked most people this question they will answer fat + sugar. Rarely will someone say, a bunch of nuts, or steak. Some might say fried chicken.(fat+carbs+salt). For me it used to be a bag potato chips with two bowls of french onion dip. I do notice I feel better when I eat fat, but I usually feel worse and more depressed if I load up on carbs.

When my mood starts taking on me and I feel the familiar depressive thoughts usually it's true that I have been eating too many carbs that week. I get thoughts like "there is no point in anything" and "my life has no hope" and very distinctly abnormal thought processes. This , for me, has a strong correlation to high carbohydrate intakes particularly with high calorie intakes (usually hand in hand).

Fat, however, in the context of low glucose, is beneficial to my mood and I feel very much more pleasant after eating fat.

I have no idea how people eat sugar and carbs and feel "good", it's always been a mystery to me, this so called emotional eating. If I want to trigger myself down the deep dark hole then a good way to go about that is to pile up on starch and sugar.

I wonder if this mood improvement from food is even relevant to real depression. Traditional depression involves loss of appetite and weight loss.

I suspect these changes in moods from foods don't have much if any relevance to long term food intake/body composition, or to major mood episodes.ItsTheWooohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12057537399918684119noreply@blogger.com
